5 Times You Might Want to Call on Jesus

The following was a press release I was sent, asking me to share this with you.

Let’s face it: life can be challenging for a modern Christian. You want to love thy neighbor, but when your neighbor is blasting loud music at 2 A.M. on a weekday, cutting you off in traffic or talking loudly through the movie you desperately wanted to see — it can be hard. The good news is that we’ve been taught how to deal with these situations. Look to Jesus’ teachings, accessed through technology, to taper a bad mood. Christian phone apps like Call on Jesus allow you to access the Bible, sermons and the tools you need to get through a hectic day. Here are five perfect opportunities to turn to the Bible to help restore that state of grace.

1. In a fender bender
Screeeeech! No matter how firmly your foot is now rooted to the break pedal, it wasn’t fast enough. You’ve hit. No matter how small the damage is, numbers need to be exchanged, the police called … etc. It can be a tedious, slow-paced experience. While you’re waiting, pull out your phone and read Isaiah 41:10. Praise God that no one was hurt.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

2. In a grocery line hold up
There you stand, clutching your basket filled with the bare necessities — milk, bread, butter — and there she stands, Mrs. I-tend-to-ignore-the-ten-items-or-less-sign, unloading her 50th can of tuna fish. Don’t get frustrated. Pull out your phone and focus on James 1:19-2.
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

3. When you’ve just been dumped
You’re sitting alone at the restaurant after receiving the line, “Let’s stay friends.” Don’t cry into your breadbasket. Search your phone for John 15:9 and remember that you are always loved, single or otherwise.
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.

4. When work trouble hits
It wasn’t your fault and yet you’re incurring the wrath of a very angry client. Resist the urge to retaliate. Instead, discretely turn to your phone and read Psalm 34:18.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

5. When your flight cancels
It’s easy to feel close to God when you’re flying at an altitude of 60,000 feet. It is a bit harder when you’re grounded at an airport with a delayed flight. When the scene around you consists of crying babies, the smells of cheap, greasy food and uncomfortable metal chairs, pull out your phone, find Psalm 118:24 and repeat,
This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

The Call on Jesus app is available through the iPhone App Store, AT&T, Boost Mobile, Droid, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and Virgin Mobile.

Are You Captured by Christ or the Culture?- Stacy Lynn Harp

Picture 9 Today I wanted to share with you the show I recorded last night, which I titled -

Are You Captured by Christ or the Culture?

This is a question I’ve been asking myself, as I’ve been examining my heart and those things that capture me. I talk about how we all have idols, and how we need to recognize those in our lives and ask ourselves….are we exalting these things above Christ Jesus or are we living more for our idols than we’d like to admit.

I also talk about “being real” – this is the call on my life, to proclaim that we do not have to live as fake people. Yet, Ironically, our society is the biggest promoter of being fake and sadly, it has even captured followers of Christ in the church. We go to church and pretend, and then we go home and watch television where people are pretending to be someone they are not. We’re entertained by it….

The question is why, and naturally I posit an answer – we do it because we were created to worship, and we do it because we are always trying to meet needs with something that God didn’t design to meet that need except for Himself. We need to be captured…by Christ, not the culture.

Isaiah 61:1-3 says
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners, [a]
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,

3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

And yet if we’re honest, we do not believe what Christ says, instead we get captured by the culture which tells us something like this…

1 The spirit of myself is my guide,
because I have anointed myself
to preach bad news to the rich.
I have been sent me to break up the whole,
to proclaim captivity for those who are free in Christ
by blinding His truth from the Light, so prisoners, remain imprisoned,
2 to proclaim the year of my favor
and the day of my vengeance on all of those who offend me, so that I
can attack all who mourn,

3 and provide for those who grieve, more condemnation, guilt, shame and pain
to bestow on them a crown of condemnation
instead of freedom,
the oil of sadness
instead of joy,
and a garment of dirt
instead of a spirit of freedom.
They will be called oaks of destruction,
a planting of the enemy of our souls
for the display of his human splendor.

Which will you choose…to be captured by Christ or the culture? Choose wisely.

Janet Parshall to Host Moody Afternoon Drive Time

Janet’s press person sent me this press release to share with you. So now you know what’s going on. :)

One of nation’s best-respected talk radio hosts will begin May 3rd

Chicago, IL – Feb. 3, 2010 – Moody Radio announced today that Janet Parshall will begin hosting the afternoon program on the Moody Radio network from 4 – 6 PM CT, beginning May 3, 2010.

“We are very excited to have Janet become a part of our Moody Radio family,” said Ed Cannon, Chief Operating Officer, Moody Bible Institute. “In anticipation of the May 3rd launch date, we look forward to her frequent appearances on many of our outlets in the days ahead as we continue to engage listeners with Moody Bible Institute’s charge to equip followers of Christ with the truth of God’s word through education and media.”

Janet is equally enthusiastic about this new partnership: “Moody Radio is the broadcasting gold standard for the proclamation of biblical truth,” she notes. “In a day where we can so easily be taken captive with vain and hollow philosophies, I relish the opportunity to encourage our listeners to pursue the mandate of speaking the truth in love.”

Broadcasting from the nation’s capital for the last 15 years, Janet has become one of the most respected talk radio hosts in America. On her daily show, Janet Parshall’s America, heard on the Salem Radio Network, Janet addressed our nation’s cultural and political issues through the lens of Scripture.

Janet has long been considered by Moody to be a leader in communicating a Christian worldview based on biblical truth. Two and a half years ago Moody Radio launched Janet’s Saturday midday show–“Talking it Over with Janet Parshall.” Through this program, Janet has showcased her ability to communicate a biblical perspective on the issues of today.

Moody Radio is working to reach more listeners by striving to more effectively unpack today’s issues from a biblical perspective. In pursuit of this cause, Moody Radio has invited Parshall to assume an exciting new role in the Moody Radio family.
