Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner

by Stacy L. Harp on June 5, 2008

I have always hated this quote and I’ll tell you why. Jesus never said it. In fact, the man that said it was Ghandi who did not follow Christ nor understand the scriptures because he was not a Christian.

So why do so many Christians quote this? Why do they quote Ghandi when he wasn’t even a believer? I think it’s a few things. First, most Christians in America are biblically illiterate. Meaning they have no real clue what the bible says or teaches because they don’t bother to read it.

So it’s a lot easier to say, “Hate the sin, love the sinner” then to actually study how God wants us to deal with sin and treat the one caught in sin.

For example, the bible teaches us that God wants us to REPENT of our sin. That is totally different than simply hating our sin. We can totally hate our sin, see Romans 7, and yet do it anyway. Just because we hate it doesn’t mean we won’t do it. God tells us to repent and turn from it.

So this part of Ghandi’s quote is completely unbiblical on its face. Yet, people quote him all the time.

For me personally, I’d rather quote Jesus because he always spoke the truth and He said He is the Truth (John 14:6). He is also alive even this moment and forevermore.

Ghandi on the other hand, is most likely in hell trying to keep cool from the flames. He made his life and his spiritual beliefs up and denied what Christ did for him. So you follow Ghandi, and you’ll most likely end up in flames.

You follow Jesus and you’ll end up in heaven with him. For me, the choice is a no brainer.

And also you should know that Ghandi was also rumored to be a pedophile, and it has been substantiated that he was indeed a racist. Why anyone would think of this man as a hero is simply a disgusting thought to me. Read this.
