Regarding Sally Kern

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, by now you’ve been made aware that Representative Sally Kern of Oklahoma has called for the extermination of gays and lesbians everywhere; well, not explicitly. She did say that the “homosexual agenda” is a worse threat than terrorism. The logic goes something like this: “Homosexual agenda” means all gays and lesbians; terrorists are people that should be killed; gays and lesbians are worse than terrorists, and therefore she has called for the extermination of all gays and lesbians.

I can’t help but think of a morbid bit of comedy in Monty Python’s Holy Grail, where a woman is condemned as a witch with the following convoluted syllogism: Wood floats, and duck also floats. If the woman weighs the same as a duck, she must be made out of wood, and therefore a witch. Oddly enough, when put on the scales, she was found to weigh as much as a duck, allowing the witch hunters to proceed with their agenda.

In reality, “the homosexual agenda” does not mean gays and lesbians everywhere anymore than “the gun lobby” is synonymous with everyone who owns a firearm. In my estimation, the warning was not about a class of people, but a specific strategy being employed at several levels.

Now, I tend to lean a bit libertarian when it comes to personal endeavors. What someone does in the privacy in their bedroom is their own deal. If you want to do something with a consenting adult, a magazine, or a picnic table, I’d rather not know about it. That’s your business. If it was a matter of giving people their privacy, I’d be down with that – but there are radical activists pushing an agenda – not just about personal preferences – but a social revolution that entails silencing any opposition.

Thirty years ago, high schools were concerned about preventing teenage pregnancies and sexually-transmitted diseases. They certainly did not launch a campaign promoting heterosexual relationships; in fact, some effort was made to discourage such relationships for the aforementioned reasons. The problem is that boys will be boys, and girls are girls. Despite efforts to curtail sensual activity, these relationships still happened. Yet, some would have you believe that students were being indoctrinated with heterosexuality, and in the interest of fairness, homosexuality should be equally promoted among students. After all, “gay” students were being incessantly bullied by their peers, and that was mainly due to ignorance about gays and lesbians.

Today, diligent activists have assured that school curricula at all grade levels features teaching about same-sex parenting, the highlighting of the homosexuality (real or imagined) of famous figures, and placing sexual-orientation on equal footing with race and a struggle for civil rights. As an aside, I think it is interesting how some will attempt to discredit the contributions of Thomas Jefferson by pointing out that he owned slaves, and then turn around and infer that homosexuality is legitimized by the contributions of famous figures. Whether or not homosexuality is “legitimate”, it is interesting that I’ve never heard anyone try to legitimize slavery by the contributions of Jefferson.

The “homosexual agenda” is about more than school curricula. It’s about lewd displays in “pride parades”, and placing activists at every level of government to ensure that gender is transitory and self-determined, and that one’s sexual preference is not simply tolerated (in the true sense of the word), but mainstream and celebrated in every place of society. Unfortunately, the only way to accomplish this “utopia” – where “breeders” (heterosexuals) are minimized – is to silence, marginalize, or prosecute anyone who does not embrace the same vision. Certainly, the promoters of this agenda are going to deny that such an agenda exists. A used car salesman is not going to tell you about the techniques he is using to sell you a car, nor many a politician tell you what they are hoping to gain by certain concessions.

For those who think that the “homosexual agenda” is fiction invented by neo-conservatives to divide the nation, I invite you to attend a weekend GLSEN (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) conference. I’ve been to one. There were workshops for activists to promote homosexuality and promiscuity to youth using several methods both on and off campus. The keynote speaker was homosexual activist Brian Graden, President of VH1 Entertainment, MTV Networks Music Group and President of Logo, who called MTV his “personal megaphone” for promoting the gay lifestyle. Saturday night there was a dance for those 21 and under. I’ll let you think about that one for awhile.

Okay, so maybe there is a “homosexual agenda”. More of a threat than terrorism? Seriously? What is more of threat to your home: Carbon monoxide poisoning or a catastrophic fire? Certainly, a catastrophic fire would be a devastating tragedy, resulting in loss of life, property, and eventually extinguished at significant cost to the community and fire fighters. Carbon monoxide poisoning requires special notice, though, because carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless. In a sense, it poses a greater threat because it can easily go undetected.

Now before you all go saying that I just wrote that gays and lesbians are just like carbon monoxide, think for a moment and hear me out. I know gays and lesbians. I love them. People should not be defined by, nor define themselves, by their sexual preference. That honestly said, we should be aware that there are people in this world, of various ideologies, who don’t just want to promote their views, but to, slander, threaten, silence, and prosecute anyone who disagrees with them. I do not advocate violence, but careful attention and diligence to preserve a world in which those who are willing to get along, can get along. Be watchful.
