If you’re like many women and even some men, then occasionally you may find yourself tuning into Oprah’s daily talkshow. I like others, at times tune in just so I can see exactly what it is that she is promoting to the masses. A few days ago she had on a panel of women who were talking about “the law of attraction” and telling their stories of success from the book The Secret. Which in my opinion is a bunch of new age hooey. That’s just me though. Maybe you don’t think it’s new age hooey, but I do.
That aside, Oprah’s newest book selection is A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, and besides encouraging people to get this book, Oprah is even having a ten week online free course to go through this book. That got my attention because if she thinks this book is THAT great, then I wanted to know why.
So like 250,000 other readers, I decided to sign up for her class, mainly because it’s free and I can watch the archived shows. And I did something that in a million years, I didn’t think I’d ever do - I bought the book. Yup, a treasure 8.00 went to the purchase of this book so that I could see firsthand the contents of this book, and exactly what type of spirituality Oprah is serving up. And since Oprah is asking people to share their insights and opinions about this book, I thought I’d begin here.
So won’t you follow me, on my journey with Oprah, with Tolle’s book in one hand and the bible in the other. As we sift and weigh the ideas in Tolle’s book to see exactly how they measure up to a biblical worldview.
Here’s how the book begins in Chapter One called “The Flowering of Human Consciousness” (and I have to admit that I laughed reading the first line) Here it is…
“Earth, 114 million years ago, one morning just after sunrise: The first flower ever to appear on the planet opens up to receive the rays of the sun.”
Did you see what I laughed at? If the phrase 114 million years ago was your answer, then circle gets the square. I laughed at this phrase because not only is there absolutely no basis in fact for this claim, but it already shows us part of the worldview of the author. He believes in evolution.
This should be an interesting work of fiction. Stay tuned.
