OC Fundraiser for Huckabee a Huge Success

Img00308Yesterday Presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, came to Orange County, California for a midmorning rally and fundraiser for his campaign.

I had the opportunity to attend and meet the Governor and thank him for the stand he is taking for the unborn and families.  I reminded him that I had met him in Florida at the Values Voter Debate that Janet Folger put on, and that I was the one who told him that he would win that – which he did.  And I told him I was wholeheartedly supporting the campaign.

While I was mingling with the crowd, I had an opportunity to speak with Daily Pilot reporter Chris Caesar and joked with him about why I was supporting Huckabee for President.  In a joking fashion, when asked why I supported Huck, I told Chris that it was because "he was good looking" and "played the bass well" after all some people think that’s the only reason we should support Huckabee.  Then I made a comment about not liking country music because the band at this fundraising event was playing country music.

Today in his article for the Daily Pilot, Chris Caesar reported that exchange by saying, "Huckabee supporter Stacy Harp said that, while not a fan of the country
music and themes Huckabee has made central to his persona, she found
his Christian background particularly compelling".

I think Caesar spins what I said because I never said that Huckabee made any of those stereotypes his "themes", I think it was the media who likes to bash Huckabee who has done everything they can to undermine him as a serious candidate.  See my previous post about CNN’s bias against Huckabee at last night’s debate.

To Caesar’s credit, he did quote me correctly later in his article when he writes,“I thought it
was great, of course,” she said of the speech. “A lot of what he talked
about regarding strengthening the American family [appealed to me].
He’s absolutely right when he says when we strengthen American
families, we strengthen our culture.”

I would also disagree with Caesar’s characterization that Orange County is an "ATM" for the Huckabee campaign.  The event was a fundraiser for Mike Huckabee, not an ATM machine.  This is no different than any other event for any other candidate, with the exception that Huckabee has done extremely well without spending millions of dollars of his own, and by doing a lot more with a lot less.  This simply displays that character matters and the media has done a good job of not letting the truth get about about Huckabee and his conservative views.

I also disagree that Huckabee "criticized" the other Republicans in his speech.  Huck didn’t criticize anyone, he stated facts.  There is a huge difference between just throwing verbal bombs and stating a persons record.

The fundraiser was a big success for Huckabee as the organizers announced he  had raised 100,000.00 – which isn’t  bad considering most attending the event appeared to be middle class.

    Hi Stacy,

Glad you liked the article. Just to respond to some of your points:

–According to my notes, you said “if there was one thing I could change about this campaign, it would be that [the country music].” I agree it was jocularly said, but the point seemed to be earnestly made. It’s true you didn’t, verbatim, refer to them as “themes”, though I didn’t put that in quotations.

–I don’t write the headlines, but I do know that our editor (who does write the headlines) was not intending to suggest that only Huckabee visits Newport Beach for fund-raisers — that would be kind of ridiculous, I agree. He meant it was an “ATM” for all candidates; it’s a joke he’s made in other headlines as well.

–I don’t think that “criticism” necessarily denotes vitriolic denunciations. I would say your post above is critical of what I did, but it’s certainly not a verbal bomb.

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for your clarifications. Let me just say this though, I don’t think what you wrote was a verbal bomb, I just used that term to describe how it felt to me when I read the article and based on previous media coverage on Huck. And like I said, considering how liberal you are, you did a pretty good job being objective. I appreciate that.
