How Sweet the Sound Music Review

Recently, I’ve had the privilege of listening to “How Sweet the Sound”, a 3-volume set of hymns performed by the GrandVista Recording Orchestra, and is available from Grand Vista Music, Inc. (www.grandvista.com). For those less orchestrally-inclined, think in terms of NBC orchestra rather than a large ensemble of high-brow musicians from a European city. The GrandVista orchestra includes drums, guitar, organ, and even harmonica.
According to the liner notes, the orchestra is comprised of some of the most accomplished studio musicians in the country, and upon listening, I don’t dispute it. Virtually all of the arrangements are piano-centric (the work of producer/pianist Chris Walters), but they vary in style. Being a little more rock ‘n’ roll than country, I especially enjoyed the soulful arrangements of “Go Tell it on the Mountain” and “This Little Light of Mine”. I felt like donning a choir robe and letting out a Shirley Caesar-esque “Hallelujah!”
Although most tracks are instrumental, a few feature talented vocals, including “His Eye is on the Sparrow” and “Amazing Grace”. Many of the tracks are suitable to accompany a personal devotion time, while others would be better suited for an upbeat gathering. Playing any of the songs as you entertain guests, or just while working around the house is sure to add a spiritual touch to your environs. All-in-all, this is a wonderful collection of hymns performed and recorded with excellence. While the CDs might not be the best gift for the teen who prefers P.O.D., this collection is likely to get a favorable reception from those who are familiar with good old hymns like “Softly and Tenderly”, “In the Garden”, and “Sweet Hour of Prayer”.
