Would You Stop a Murder If You Knew When It Would Happen?
by Stacy L. Harp
What would you do if you knew a murder was going to take place?
Recently I was pondering the magnificent work of God and thinking about new ways to make a difference for Christ in my life. I thought about all the different ideas I have had in the past from my Jesus is Coming Merry Christmas Campaign last year, to my blue band campaign to let people know that there is Hope in Christ.
But something was stirring deep within my soul and I felt burdened by the fact that with so many Christians in America and yet our land is so corrupt and sinful. Do we really love God with all of our hearts - No.
Do pastors preach with passion that we should love God with all of our hearts - No. And it got me thinking about Christian persecution and martyrdom and how those Christians live their faith out and love God with all of their lives.
I want to be like that. But I thought - HOW….if I knew a murder was going to take place next Friday morning between 9 AM and NOON, what would I do to stop it? Well, if I really knew this to be true, that a real MURDER was going to take place…the right thing to do would be to interfere and try to stop it. But would I?
I decided that I would pose this question to some of my family and a few friends at church. The conversation went something like this…
Q: If you knew a murder was going to take place on Friday morning between 9 AM and Noon, what would you do?
A: I would hope that I would go down and try to stop it. That maybe I’d call the police and tell them where it would be.
Q: What if I told you that a friend was going to that location and that he was encouraging her to go too, even though he was warned that if she went, there would be a murder?
A: Well, I would try to convince him to change his mind. And I would go down and try to stop it. And the police would be notified.
Q: Well, suppose that the police had already been notified so many times and they decided that it was not a very high priority and so they didn’t take you seriously? Then what?
A: Well, I would like to think that I would get some others to go with me and try to warn those two from going to that location, especially if I knew for a fact that there would be a murder that was going to take place.
Q: What if it was legal and you’d get fined or in trouble legally for trying to stop the murder and save potential murder victims lives? Would you still do it?
A: Hmmm, I would hope so.
Then without skipping a beat, I told my friend and my family members that in fact, it is true. This Friday, between 9 AM and Noon, there will be multiple murders taking place, and the victims are preborn babies. Abortions happen every single week and in some locations every single day - and yet, where are the defenders of these lives???
Is it true that as Christians we would really stop a murder if we knew when and where it was taking place?
Sadly, the overwhelming answer is No. Our nation in guilty of shedding tons of innocent blood because few, very few, have risked it all to stop the murder.
Now the question I have for you is this - If you knew a murder was going to be taking place in your city, town, county, state or nation - what will you do to stop it?
