The following is reprinted from the National Religious Broadcasters email.

With national polls indicating a profound slump in approval ratings for President Bush and Congress, Americans seem to be unaware of their leaders’ efforts. Religious Freedom Bill Stalled in House Committee">Religious Freedom Bill Stalled in House Committee

The following is from an email sent from The National Religious Broadcasters.

A bill that would limit the remedy to injunctive relief and deny attorneys’ fees in a civil action against a state or local official in cases of public expression of religion has been temporally stalled in committee. Further discussion on Rep. John Hostettler’s (R-IN) bill entitled Public Expression of Religion Act of 2005 (HR 2679) was cut off when the Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) lacked a quorum of members needed to continue discussion in a late afternoon meeting. The bill will likely come up for a vote in committee after the congressional August recess, preparing its way for full House approval yet this year.

Crossway Bibles and The United Bible Societies

Celebrate Growth of ESV Bible Worldwide

Wheaton, IL—The growth of the English Standard Version (ESV) Bible is no secret; neither is it an exclusively American phenomenon. On July 9, 2006, representatives of The United Bible Societies (UBS) worldwide, gathered with representatives of Crossway Bibles in Denver, Colorado to celebrate the progress of the ESV Bible in their countries and regions. Over a quarter of a million ESV Bibles are now in print through the partnership of Crossway, the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS), and The UBS.

“I find myself suspecting very strongly that this was the most important thing that I have done for the Kingdom and that the product of our labors is perhaps the biggest milestone in Bible translation in the past fifty years or more.”

Bible Society representatives from Nigeria, Kenya, New Zealand, Philippines, and Singapore all reported on the impact of the ESV in their areas. In Nigeria, the ESV has already been endorsed by the largest Christian church, the Redeemed Christian Church of God. In Singapore, the ESV has been selected as the translation for the national cathedral of the Anglican Church. The Bible Societies in these countries, each of which has a large English speaking constituency, are turning to the ESV as an essentially literal translation to meet the needs of the church in their countries.

“In so many countries in Africa and Asia, people are finding that the ESV really resonates with them,” explained Derek Hill, Head of Production Services at the British and Foreign Bible Society, to an audience of more than 40 Bible Society representatives.

Crossway Books & Bibles is an internationally-recognized publisher of Gospel literature, Christian books, and the English Standard Version (ESV) Bible. For more information on Crossway Books & Bibles, visit www.crossway.com. For more information on the ESV Bible, visit www.esv.org.

In Pakistan Christian Beaten by Muslims for “Polluting” a Public Drinking Glass">In Pakistan Christian Beaten by Muslims for “Polluting” a Public Drinking Glass

The  following is exclusively from VOM Media.Paknasir_dsc02709

On June 6, 2006, Nasir Ashraf, a Christian stone mason, was brutally attacked by militant Muslims just outside Lahore. While working on the construction of a room at a school near Manga Mandi in Pakistan, Nasir took a break after becoming thirsty. He drew water and drank from a glass chained to a cemented public water tank next to a mosque, which was reserved for “all” poor people. Returning to the construction site, a Muslim man asked him, “Why did you drink water from this glass since you are a Christian?” The man accused Nasir of polluting the glass. The Muslim man yanked the glass off the iron chain, broke it and threw it in a garbage can. The man summoned other militant Muslims to the scene, furiously saying, “This Christian polluted our glass.” Hearing this, the incensed mob began beating Nasir, yelling that a Christian dog drank water from their glass.

The militant Muslims encouraged bystanders to beat Nasir because it would be a “good” deed that would benefit them in heaven. The attackers pushed Nasir off a ledge onto the ground. The impact of the fall dislocated his shoulder and broke his collar bone in two places. This knocked Nasir unconscious and he did not regain his senses until he reached a clinic. Nasir’s father took him home and a VOM representative was alerted about the incident. VOMedical is helping with Nasir’s medical treatment and is monitoring his recovery from the attack.
