Help Mom! Hollywood Is In My Hamper!

This morning I did an interview with the very sweet and lovable author of Help Mom! Hollywood Is In My Hamper!, Katherine DeBrecht. What a sweetheart she was to talk to.

We discussed both of her great Help Mom books, the first being Help Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed !- a bestseller on Barnes and Noble and other great book outlets! And the second, soon to be released, but currently available through Amazon and other online companies called Help Mom! Hollywood Is In My Hamper!

I loved both of these books. First of all, they are extremely beautiful books. The illustrations for each book are done by Jim Hummel who is an award winning illustrator. The construction of each of these books is solid, glossy and just very well done. It’s worth every cent you’ll buy for the book, just because of the production quality alone.

However, the messages in each of DeBrecht’s books are even more important. Here we have a brave conservative woman who is using the medium of children’s literature to teach good, solid, moral and conservative truths - AND - she does it with humor! It’s a great combination, especially in this day and age when the liberals seem to think they are the only ones who can make fun of conservatives and Christians.

If you have children, were a child once, or know someone with children, buy a few of these books. In fact, buy a few for your liberal friends (just to annoy them) :) and have a fun time talking about the messages with your kids.

The interview will be available via podcast and mp3 file in a few days. In the meantime, if you want to hear another interview Katherine did with my buddy Sharon Hughes, that interview will air tomorrow online at Changing Worldviews

Danish Church Vandalized by Graffiti in Southern California

I was in a meeting with someone this morning and they told me about this incident that happened in my own back yard.

Here’s the story from the Orange County Register.

FBI investigates graffiti at Danish church:
Obscenities spray painted on Yorba Linda building.

The Orange County Register

The FBI has opened an investigation into a weekend spray paint attack that left obscenities on the walls of the Emanuel Danish Lutheran Church, officials said.

“It was an attack on a church and we are concerned that it may have been motivated by hate,” said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller. The federal agents have not classified the attack on the church, in the 16800 block of Bastanchury Road, as a hate crime.

Brea police Sgt. Darrin Devereuex said the attack occurred between 11:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The obscenities painted on the walls did not appear to have any connection to Muslim outrage over cartoons defaming the prophet Muhammad and published in Danish newspapers, which have sparked riots all over the world.

The obscenities were written in blue and black spray paint. The church has been the target of vandals in the past, Devereuex added.

“Our first thought was that it was connected to the Muhammad cartoons,” said the church’s pastor, Anne Grethe Nielsen.

“We think it could be some troublemakers, since the bad language had nothing to do with the cartoons,” she said. “We think they don’t really know what they are talking about since they wrote things like ‘Buddha Rules.’ We expected something like Muhammad.”

She said it was discomforting to think somebody is lurking in the back yard of the church.

“We had a great reaction from the local Muslim organizations. They have called us. They didn’t think it was done in the name of Muhammad. They were upset that people would try to vandalize our church in the name of Muhammad. It has nothing to do with Islam. They offered to help paint,” Nielsen said.

“We painted it over within the first hour, since we had a memorial scheduled that day for a deceased member, which is why they covered it.”

An Interview with Ruth Graham

Mind & Media reviewer, Mary Yerkes, recently did an interview with author Ruth Graham, daughter of Billy Graham. The interview was very good and worth reading. Read the full interview here.

Ruth’s Message to Others

Not everyone can relate to struggles such as yours–divorce, betrayal, or depression. Yet, your message of hope, healing, and restoration is universal. What would you like to say to believers who cannot personally relate to your experiences?

As I travel around the country and get to talk with people from all walks of life, I can tell you everyone has a hurt. Pain, heartache, struggles are common to us all. Maybe it doesn’t come to us in the form of divorce, betrayal or depression. But it may come in the form of stress over finances, spiritual uncertainty, an addicted loved one or our own addiction, physical aliment, straying children, empty marriage, loneliness, loss…the list is endless. And what hurts for one may not hurt for another. Heartache is relative. The Bible says we will all encounter hardship along the way of life. No one is immune.

A Surprising Response

What about the response to your book has surprised you?

The response to my book has been very rewarding. It is helping so many people. And churches are using it as a handbook on how to help the hurting. I am thrilled by that. As I mentioned the purpose for the book was much bigger than my story and I am so thankful when people see that.

I get letters from people all over the world telling me how the book has been and encouragement. How it urged them to be more transparent. One lady wrote to say that it opened her eyes to how much she had to praise God for! How great is that?

It’s all for and about Him.

Disappointment

What responses have been disappointing?

I have been surprised by the lack of understanding of grace. I have received brutal criticism. One lady asked for her money back – I sent it. One lady sent the book back and scribbled all over it saying it was trash. These things are few but very hurtful. I write everyone that writes to me – even the ugly ones.

One lady sent a particularly scathing comment via e-mail. I wrote her back. She was shocked that I actually got her email and responded to her. She thought she had sent her comments off into cyber space not thinking a real person – much less me – would ever read it. She appreciated my letter and apologized!

When I published the book I knew I was making myself vulnerable and it was scary but I did it really in obedience to God. It took 2 years to write it – it was done with lots of prayer, care and work.
