Crown of Fire: Chapters 8 – 11

Last night I snuggled up in bed and continued to read this great book, but my eyes got heavy and I didn’t get as far as I had hoped. I was only able to read four chapters, but I’m telling you, these were GREAT chapters.

All I can tell you is that I have bent just about all the pages in these chapters because it’s so rich with great information. Ransom’s dad is taken away by some very mean people and is told by his dad to go to John Knox’s home.

Once Ransom is there, John Knox totally takes him under his wing. They move into the castle with some other guys who are sitting under Knox and the story continues. Ransom is threatened by a bully and at the same time is being shown as a wiser man than the rest, despite his youth.

When I left off Ransom and Knox had to leave quickly to learn something about the fate of Ransom’s dad.

Crown of Fire: Chapters 1-7

Yesterday I began reading the new book by Craig & Janet Parshall called Crown of Fire. This is the first of three novels in their new Thistle and the Cross series published by Harvest House.

As is my custom, I read the Acknowledgments and found that a few editors were thanked as well as Janet’s family line which has a rich Christian heritage. Janet’s heritage comes from Scotland and Craig’s come from England. And near the end they thank all the lovely people from Scotland whom they have met in their many travels there.

I love reading the Acknowledgments because that gives you some insight into the authors heart. And you can also see the other people who did a lot of work and who never really get any credit like the editors in this case.

Chapters 1 – 7

The book opens in chapter one with the death of Ransom Mackenzie, the main character in the book. However, as you read on in the next chapter the authors take you back in time and begin the story of how Ransom and John Knox had a relationship where Knox mentored Ransom spiritually.

Without giving away too much of the story the thing that has struck me about these first seven chapters so far is the intensity with which we are reading about the importance of preserving God’s word and then ultimately dying for it.

A father’s love in trying to protect his young son from the truth of those who hate Christians and who have branded Protestants as heretics, and yet the truth of the Scripture that would allow a man to die burned at the stake for his faith in Christ Jesus.

The writing is moving, intense, very saturated with scripture and historical information. And so far, I’m totally loving this book!

Crown of Fire: Introduction

I have literally been waiting for months for this new book by Craig and Janet Parshall to appear. One reason why is because out of all the authors I’ve read these two have totally captured my heart and imagination in their writings. In fact, the Parshall’s are the only authors I’ve read every single book they have written. So I know this is going to be a great book.

I thought that instead of writing one basic review I would blog about Crown of Fire as I read. This way you can go along with me on my journey and hopefully join along and buy the book yourself.

“There are words in this land as dangerous as black gunpowder.”

The above quote is the first thing you read on the back cover of this historical novel based in the 1500’s. Do we have your attention?

The back cover says the following:

Ransom Mackenzie’s life is changed forever when he witnesses one of the Scottish Reformers being burnt at the stake. Soon the young man throws in his lot with the Protestant revolutionaries and John Knox, their spiritual leader.

His dreams of heroism end abruptly when the rebellion is crushed. His father is arrested for printing the Scriptures in the common tongue, and Ransom is forced to hide in the Scottish Highlands. There he meets and starts to fall in love with wild, lovely Margaret.

But his time away from the turmoil is not to last. Knox, facing powerful oppostition, summons him to London. Enticed by the glittering surroundings of the Court – and the allure of a young woman of the aristocracy – Ransom finds himself at a crossroads…where a man can burn for his beliefs, and silence is betrayal.”
