Pastors Use Comic Books to Inspire Their Churches

Is the Bible enough to inspire church attenders? Well apparently not…

When H. Michael Brewer watches Mr. Fantastic, The Thing, the Invisible Woman and the Human Torch battle Dr. Doom in the movie “Fantastic Four,” he’ll be seeing something much larger — a metaphor for the church.

The Villa Hills pastor has been a comic-book fan since before he learned to read, and for almost as long, he’s drawn parallels between superheroes and religion.

“Intuitively, I probably made the connection at a very early age,” he said.
In the case of the Fantastic Four, Brewer likes to think of them as an unconventional family — four individuals brought together by a crisis (exposure to cosmic radiation that gave them their powers).

Just like the diversity in the church, each member of the foursome has his or her own problems — The Thing is disfigured by the accident; the Invisible Woman is loving and generous but taken for granted; the Human Torch is a teenager with a temper; and Mr. Fantastic, the leader, feels responsible for the group because of his role in the accident.

"Jack Lewis" is a pseudonym. When I first began using the internet I found out that there were a lot of crazy people out there and wanted some anonymity. The name served it’s purpose, but eventually people began to know me by that name alone. When I started setting up my own sites, I got JackLewis.net.

My background goes all over the place. I have a Bachelor degree in Broadcasting from John Brown University. I worked for a while in television as studio crew, then as a producer for a television ministry, and years later as a radio announcer at a local Christian station. Broadcasting jobs seemed too scarce so I picked up an Associate degree in Accounting, and another in Business Administration, but by the time I finished that, God called me to Seminary.

I attended South Western Baptist Theological Seminary in Forth Worth for a year and a half, and left to get married. I eventually wound up working as an optician. Because we have two children with a rare congenital disorder, health insurance was hard to come by, so when a job opportunity to work for a national company with excellent insurance came along, I applied, but was turned down. My wife then applied and was accepted. So since then I’ve been a stay-at-home dad, homeschooling our four kids, and working on various projects on the internet.

In these past few years I’ve written a novel, and co-wrote the autobiography of a friend who runs an international ministry. I’ve also developed numerous sites like SpelChek.com, BytheFirePlace.com, phpBible.org, radioJesus.com and LookListenLearn.org. I also built and manage the most active site for the congenital condition my children have, helping hundreds of people world-wide communicate with others dealing with the same problems and worries.

While I abandoned any real effort at anonymity several years ago, I kept the pseudonym, because so many people knew me by that name. My dream is to write novels for a living. This blog is a means to that end. Besides giving me the opportunity to hone my writing skills, as it grows, my hope is to build a "following" of people who like my writing, therefore an initial target audience for whenever I can get published.

Gideons Convention 2005

Last week you may have noticed I didn’t post anything on Friday, and the reason why was because I was attending the International Convention for Gideon’s International that was held here in Anaheim, California.

I was especially excited about this event because I knew I would meet some special brothers and sisters in the Lord who have ministered in countries that were persecuted.

Usandanton_1  This picture is of Anton and my husband Randall and I.  We were having dinner at the Outback because Anton wanted ribs!

Anton is a Gideon who serves in Indonesia and he handed out 10,000 bibles last year all by himself!  He also shared with us stories about giving bibles to Muslims in their schools.

He didn’t speak English too well, so we had a lot of laughter during our conversation.

Drandre2_1 Then we were so blessed to have breakfast at 7 A.M. with a dear brother from Rwanda.  His first name is Andre and he is a doctor of epistemology.  He shared with us how his family had been killed during the years of intense genocide and then spoke of the restoration of his soul.  He was such a blessing and I’m so thankful to have had the blessing of being with him.

And then we "ran into accidently" some friends of ours who live in the Philippines who have been Gideons forever.  These are the Lims.

Lims And it was amazing because there were a few thousand people at this convention and we hadn’t seen them in years.

Please remember to pray for all the persecuted.  These are some of their precious faces.
